What is this?

HD-Gfonts is a simple plugin that allows you to replace the standard fonts of your headings with a wider range of fonts from the Google Font Directory. There are seventeen fonts to choose from, including: Cantarell, Cardo, Crimson Text, Droid Sans, Droid Serif, IM Fell Double Pica, Inconsolata, Josefin Sans Std Light, Lobster, Molengo, Nobile, OFL Sorts Mill Goudy, Old Standard TT, Reenie Beanie, Tangerine, Vollkorn and Yanone Kaffeesatz.

 

 

What are Google Fonts?

The Google font directory is a collection of fonts hosted on Google servers and available for use on your website under an open source license. Unlike the CSS font-face system they work on all browsers (even IE6) and unlike flash embedded systems the fonts are completely search engine friendly. What to do after installing?

Install the zip file via the administration install manager as per any other plugin. Once it has installed go to the plugin manager and select HD-Gfonts. Enable the plugin, choose the font from the parameters list and click on apply.

 

 

How does it work?

Each font has it's own CSS file which can be found in plugins > system > Gfonts. The font style is applied to H1, H2, H3, H4, .componentheading and .contentheading. CSS parameter settings are available for each of these styles and if you want the font applied to any further classes use the Additional CSS parameter. For example, if you have selected the Droid Sans font and want it applying to your main body text insert the following code in the Additional CSS parameter box...

 

body { font-family: 'Droid Sans', arial, serif; }

 

To remove any default styles simply delete the text and click on apply.

 

 

Will it work on all templates?

Admittedly I haven't tested it on every template but the simple answer is... Yes.

As the CSS file is loaded last the font should take precedent over any prior style sheets.

Speciale lettertypes gebruiken

Tekst in speciale lettertypen weergeven, iedereen doet het, de ene al wat meer als den andere, en ook zijn de manieren zeér verschillend. Van CSS naar text-replacement met afbeeldingen naar sIFR tot Cufon.

Eenvoudig en snel gaat ook

Momenteel is Cufon mijn favoriet, snel, eenvoudig en volledig met CSS te bepalen, links werken perfect alsook het hover effect. Het enige nadeel is dat je de tekst niet kan selecteren, maar zo gauw de Cufon-ontwikkelaars een oplossing hebben om dit ook te laten werken in Opera geven ze de oplossing pas vrij, ze gaan voor crossbrowser solutions.

Is er een limiet op Cufon

Normaal gezien niet, er wordt toch niets gezegd op de site zelf, maar je merkt wel enige performance hinder als het om véél replacements gaat.
Zo was er een project dat alleen al voor de opbouw/uitzicht van de homepage al 35 replacements nodig had, dit omzetten naar een JavaScript die deze replacements moest afhandelen en maintainen was al een opgave op zich.
Omdat het zich om een Drupal project handelde, had ik in het JavaScript voorzien dat er eerst gecheckt werd of het betreffende element wel bestond, en indien ja, dan pas replacen.

Stel u nu een JavaScript voor met bovenstaande regel x 60, het lettertype-JavaScript voorzien van alle leestekens en Latins (voor Franse tekst) (77Kb), het word een zware site.
Inderdaad, zo bleek nadien dat op een trage, niet zo up to date model computer de site wel echt lang nodig had om te laden, en je alle replacements gewoon zag gebeuren.

Less is more

Dus aan alle designers, text-replacement is cool, je kan je eigen ding doen en zelfs met deze limitatie wild gaan, maar als je site eronder begint te lijden zijn de limieten snel gezet.
